Outlaw

Calgary was gearing up for the Calgary Stampede while we were in town. Think Sydney Royal on steroids with a focus on rodeo events and chuckwagon races similar to Ben Hur chariot races.

'Outlaw' was the biggest, baddest, bucking bull ever. He reached celebrity status with his record of only 2 successful 8 second rides from 71 attempts from the world's best cowboys.

Although Calgary likes to promote itself as a cowboy town, it was really built from oil money. Lots of oil money. There are nearly as many oil wells in the paddocks surrounding the city as there are cows. Petrol is cheap and huge pick up trucks dominate the massive road system.

Picked up our van today after a thorough briefing from the lovely Angie. Managed to stay on the right side of the road with continued encouragement from Annie. Rode the Sea to Sky gondola at Squamish before heading to our camp site for 2 nights at Nairn Falls Provincial Park. Great campsite and the falls are spectacular with the river swollen from snow melt. The next day was spent at the alpine resort town of Whistler. Lots of mountain bikers utilising the ski slopes and lifts. Nice walk following ex olympic cross country ski routes to Lost Lake.

Wet gem

There is only one road into Prince Rupert, effectively, a 238km dead end off the Cassiar Highway. Most visitors arrive by ferry or cruise ship. The Ruby Princess was docked a few days ago - spreading goodwill. Prince Rupert has the highest rainfall in Canada with an average of 2594mm raining on 235 days per year. Very green, very wet and lots of mozzies.  Logging and fishing are the main industries here with tourism starting to grow. Nice area around the dock with the best cafe yet.

Home run

Well, we are having our last day in Canada before flying home tonight. The weather is beautiful in Vancouver and although we are looking forward to getting home, it will be sad to finish a great trip.
