Stewart

Stewart is a small town on the west coast, north of Prince Rupert.  It still has a romantic, frontier town vibe and is surrounded by beautiful rugged mountains, rushing glacial rivers and dense forest. On the way in we passed several black bears (we have stopped counting) and a mother grizzly bear with 2 cubs. Soon after checking in to our campground we learnt that there is a young male rogue grizzly bear who is making a nuisance of himself around town.  The day before we arrived a local lady woke to find him on her porch and had to deploy a ‘bear banger’ ( a firecracker like the old bungers) to scare him off.  We saw him twice in our campground only about 30m away (unfortunately no photos as he was on a mission)

The road up to the viewpoint for the huge Salmon Glacier involved crossing the border into Alaska and heading up a steep mining road along the Salmon River. Unfortunately the road was blocked by snow only a few km from the view point and we had to turn back. Luckily there were several places we could see the glacier from the road.

We met an English couple who had driven their van from the bottom of Argentina and a father and son who were riding their bikes across Canada, from the Atlantic Ocean, across to the Pacific, up to the Artic Ocean before heading back home to Toronto. Travel possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
